Making a phone battery to be ten times more durable became the first target of the research project named Steeper which is now guarded IBM, Infineon and a number of universities in Europe.
Cell phone batteries are not lasting long been a problem in itself. The reason, consumers need to recharge their batteries every day. This is not only a consumer complaint, but cell phone makers themselves, such as Nokia, Apple or Research In Motion (RIM).
"Battery technology is no longer meet the power needs of today's smartphones continue to increase. As such, management and power efficiency to be the biggest challenge facing mobile phone vendors in order to provide satisfaction to consumers," said Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd.
Reuters on Thursday (28/10/2010), based on the record of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the average electronic devices currently spend about 15 percent of electricity consumption in a household. And energy demand is predicted to soar three-fold by 2030.
"Our vision is to split up this research in order to allow the manufacturers to make a computer or device utilizing the energy that is not needed during sleep mode. This is what we call zero-watt PC," said Adrian Ionescu kooordinator project of the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne federales.
The scientists will apply the nanotechnology to reduce electricity consumption, costs, and extended battery life gadgets. Steeper project also aims to reduce energy needs from other electronic devices such as TV or computer super-efficient 10 times more active now, and reduce power consumption virtually in a state of standby.
