Sony has just posted a remarkable achievement for the PlayStation gaming device.Japan-based company claims that sales of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) has reached 50million units worldwide, within a period of five years since its launch.

Reported by PC Magazine and quoted on Monday (4/18/2011), the pride of Sony'sconsole sales continue to rise. Recorded about 3.5 million PS3 units shipped in 2006,then increased to 9.1 million in 2007, 10.1 million in 2008 and recent data 13 million in2009.

Note however, Sony calls it 'sell-in numbers', which refers to the number of PS3 unitssold to retailers, not directly to consumers. Thus, these figures are not entirelycomparable with figures reported by retail competition Sony. Even so, analysts assessthe PS3 sales figures remain impressive.

Sony also said the growth also occurred on the PlayStation Network (PSNsimultaneously with the console itself. PSN currently has more than 75 million registered accounts and operates in
59 countries.
