MTV VMAs 2014: Nicki Minaj explains wardrobe malfunction
Well, that didn't take long. Exactly three minutes into Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki Minaj put on a performance of her hit "Anaconda" that rivaled Miley Cyrus' infamous twerk heard around the world. Sporting a green bikini that hugged her curvaceous form like a snakeskin, the rapper gyrated her way through her ode to derrieres.

One year after Miley Cyrus sparked controversy over her gyrating antics at the 2013 MTV VMA Awards, Minaj seemed determined to one-up her fellow diva. The former "American Idol" judge's performance included crotch-grabbing and butt-shaking. But the coup de grace may have been the sight of a female dancer mounting a prone Minaj.

Even when Minaj switched to a more conservative, black dress for her performance with Ariana Grande and Jessie J on “Bang Bang,” she nearly had a major wardrobe malfunction. The rapper did manage to maintain her grip on the dress and avoid giving the national TV audience an even more explicit look at her assets. "You all know I had a wardrobe malfunction," Minaj yelled at reporters shortly after arriving at the Republic Records Afterparty at Project LA late on Sunday.

Earlier she explained to Us Weekly, "It felt amazing to open the show. We ran out of time getting the dress zipped up."  Not everyone echoed Minaj's nonchalant nature about the wardrobe slip. "She could never get into that dress," an insider told the mag. The former "American Idol" judge's performance included crotch-grabbing and butt-shaking. But the coup de grace may have been the sight.

During the dress rehearsal she did the number numerous times and could not make it into the dress zipped up even once," the insider added. "I've no idea why she didn't just decide to wear something else. She just didn't have the time to change from one outfit into another, there was no way."

All in all, however, the performance could've been much worse: A 6-foot-long Boa constrictor bit one of Minaj's dancers during a Friday rehearsal of the song.

The snake was a no-show during Sunday night's performance
