    Catherine Bellis
The biggest star at the U.S. Open on Tuesday was a 15-year-old Californian named Catherine Bellis with a nickname giftwrapped for New York.

Bellis, whose middle name is Cartan, goes by “CiCi.” They are initials so often chanted at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx but on Tuesday they could be heard echoing at Court Six in Flushing Meadows, where Bellis stunned world No. 13 Dominika Cibulkova in the first round, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, in front of a raucous crowd.
“It’s crazy to think that I’m actually here right now with all these other people,” Bellis, of Atherton, Calif., said after becoming the youngest woman to win here since 1996 (Anna Kournikova, also 15), three years before Bellis was born.

Bellis’ love for everything about her magical afternoon was on full display throughout the match, all the way until she broke Cibulkova, 25, on match point at 5:24 p.m., which sent the youngster bouncing to the bleachers to hug family and friends as if she had won much more.

Bellis had qualified as a wild-card entry only after winning this year’s USTA girls’ 18s national championship, where she was the youngest to win since Lindsay Davenport in 1991. She entered Tuesday’s match ranked 1,208th in the world, and so it was not only understandable but appropriate and refreshing to see Bellis fist-pumping after big points, including several long volleys she won with a strong forehand. “She’s having so much fun,” one fan noted.

Bellis’ key moment occurred in the third set, when she recovered from a 3-1 deficit to win three straight games.

Afterward, it took several security guards and event workers to separate the crowd of autograph-seekers blocking Bellis’ path back to nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium. She stood in the hallway holding her cell phone, trying to process the wave of text messages flooding in. “I can’t even count,” she said, scrolling endlessly downward with her thumb. “It’s still going.”

Then the home-schooled youngster, who counts Kim Clijsters as her idol, held court with the media for almost 15 minutes while her father filmed with a home video camera from the auditorium seats.
“I’m feeling amazing. I’m still speechless,” Bellis said. “I’m still in shock from the match.”

Bellis’ second-round opponent will be Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, ranked No. 48 in the world, who made quick work on Tuesday — 6-1, 6-2 — of Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, world No. 128. But win or lose in the second round, Bellis has already made her mark on this year’s tournament. She still will compete in the U.S. Open juniors tournament and remain an amateur to keep college open as an option down the road.

Bellis’ triumph was an especially welcome highlight on Tuesday, because while 27th-ranked Madison Keys, the United States’ brightest youth prospect for Slam success, rolled past Jarmila Gajdosova, 6-0, 6-3, the young American men did not fare as well.
Jack Sock, ranked 55th, retired in the third set of a loss to Spain’s Pablo Andujar, losing 6-4, 3-6, 1-6, and Noah Rubin of Rockville Centre fell in his Slam debut to Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, 4-6, 3-6, 0-6.
On the bright side for the U.S., both Sloane Stephens and Keys have advanced to the second round. And there is a bubbly and resilient talent in Bellis — younger than all of them — who showed she embraces the big stage.

“Believing was the number one thing I had to do today,” Bellis said. “If you don’t believe, there’s one option, and if you do believe, then there’s two options. You can believe and lose or believe and win, but if you don’t believe, you’re gonna lose anyway.”

Catherine Bellis shocks the U.S. Open with a first-round win over 13th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova.

World Cup 2014 Brasil : U.S. Beats Ghana 2-1 in World Cup Game

World Cup 2014 Brasil - Clint Dempsey scored in the first minute and rookie substitute John Brooks scored a late game winner as the U.S. defeated Ghana 2-1 Monday in the World Cup opener for both.

The victory gave the Americans some revenge against the tiny West African county that knocked them out of the last two World Cups and put the U.S. and Germany on top of the Group G, with Ghana and Portugal at the bottom.

Dempsey's goal came on a low shot just a half-minute into the match. Ghana dominated much the rest of the game, and Andre Ayew leveled in the 82nd minute.

Just four minutes later, Brooks - a 21-year-old defender who came on at halftime because Matt Besler was injured - scored off a corner from Graham Zusi. It was the first time an American sub had ever scored in the World Cup.

''I said it to the bench minutes before, `We're going to get some chances still,''' U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. ''So we are still in the game after the equalizer, we just need to kind of push and push and grind it out. That's what they did. Here comes a set piece we trained over and over and over that stuff. And he puts it in, so well deserved.''

Dempsey, Brooks give US 2-1 win over Ghana

Dempsey's goal made him the first U.S. player to score in three different World Cups and was
the fastest ever scored by an American in the tournament. DaMarcus Beasley, who became the first American to play in four World Cups, started the buildup to Dempsey's goal with a pass to Jermaine Jones, who fed it to Dempsey inside the penalty area.

With a nifty move to split defenders John Boye and Sulley Muntari, Dempsey sent the left-footed shot past goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, where the ball bounced off the post and in. Already ahead after the game had barely started, the Americans looked well on their way to erasing eight years of frustration caused by Ghana.

The Black Stars regrouped at halftime, and the U.S. looked punchless on the attack after losing striker Jozy Altidore to an apparent hamstring injury in the 21st minute.Ghana applied relentless pressure on U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard and finally drew even when captain Asamoah Gyan flicked a backheel pass to Ayew, who used the outside of his left foot for a powerful shot.

Ghana was still pressing when Brooks, 6-foot-3, soared over defenders to get his head on the ball. Brooks, who plays for Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, appeared shocked to have scored, raising his hands to his head before falling to the ground to be mobbed by his teammates.

''What I can say is it was a very tough game,'' Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said. ''Playing at this level any little mistake can cost you dearly. We didn't deserve to get the first goal against us.''

Red Bull who won the pole in the name of Mark Webber failed to take any of the drivers, both Webber and Sebastian Vettel, winner in the race to be held at theNurburgring circuit on Sunday (24/07/2011).

However, because Webber can still grab the pole and finished third and fourthplace finish Vettel, Red Bull principal Christian Horner considers the results inGermany is not a disaster.

"If you look at Valencia, McLaren are declining, while the Ferrari it is rising, but obviously they are a great team and they fought hard to chase us," Horner said inAutosport.

"We remain competitive in many types of different tracks. We can win the pole inall Grand Prix this season, we won six of the 10 series and always be on the podium, so this is far from a disaster," he added.

However, Horner admits that this is an alarm for his team. In the future, 'Red Bull' must be vigilant because all teams want to evict them.

"Obviously, this race is a reminder that we must not relax, and indeed none ofthese team members who lazed. Everyone keep working hard," Horner guarantee
